This is the piece I donated for the Rise Japan show at Gallery Heist and Kokoro. I was so happy to learn it sold!! The night of the show it was so packed I didn't really get to see much of the artwork on the walls. I heard they sold a lot though! The piece is pretty small about 3 x 6 inches. So great to be a part of something like this especially since all the proceeds are going to Japan.

Hipster Pigeons and Rats

I soon realized that Pigeons are naturally rounder than most hipsters and have wings instead of arms...hard to fit in those tiny t-shirts. So I thought about Rats. There are tons of those in the city as well, maybe not as visual as Pigeons...

Since moving to San Francisco (last June) I have been amazed by many things. One is the amount of pigeons, homeless people, tourists and hipsters. I decided to try to combine a few of these things. First experiment was pigeons and hipsters.

Winter's Bone

I listened to the audio book "Winter's Bone" and this is how I saw the main character, Ree. She has quite a tough time in the book but sticks to her purpose until the end. I recently saw the movie and was kinda disappointed. First of all, the drug dealing uncle is 3 times as scary as in the movie. In the book he has half his face burned off from a meth lab explosion. That is just one aspect which the movie fluffed up, there are many more. Although, I liked the book better, the movie is still pretty awesome. Lots of great characters who seem to have their stories etched on their faces. Great shots of the untamed Ozarks.

I am so bad about getting christmas cards and presents in the mail on time. This year was no different, but I scanned a few I made. I wanted them super cute so was looking at some of Mary Blair's children. The first one is a girl dressed as Lucia, which is a Swedish tradition. I actually was Lucia in grade school :) She wears a wreath with candles on her head and gives cakes to people. The second is a plump christmas owl and the third is a boy dressed as Rudolph. Don't ask me why, just thought he would be cute. I used Gouache and cleaned them up a bit in photoshop. Happy Holidays!

I recently made this for an art test. They asked me to make a carriage pulled by animals and make it unique to me. I wanted the carriage to be for a sleeping baby so thought of animals that move really slow. My first idea was a Sloth but after watching videos of how they move online, I decided a turtle would be more realistic. This is what I came up with :)

This semester is coming to an end! Trying to balance everything but seems I am always a few steps behind. One more week though so not so bad. Can't wait to have some free time :D Still messing with Shaders in Maya. It sure is hard to get a natural looking skin. Lighting is also a very important factor in making things look realistic in Maya. I also made some eyeballs, gnomen has some helpful tutorials. I just saw Shrek 4 and really appreciated the details in the skin. Amazing! Also the baby ogres were too cute :) I want to make a cloth doll of one now.

Pecos Bill Project

My latest project is BFA, still very early in the process. I think I am going to make this once all the Viz Dev work is done! If you can't tell from my notes, I am going to make a Toy Theater out of layers of paper as well as paper sculpture. The actual puppets will be wither paper clay or paper cut out. I chose to focus on Pecos Bill's earlier life. He was lost along the Pecos River as a baby and an old Coyote found him. He was raised by the Coyote pack and so believed he was a Coyote until be meets a human. In my interpretation, I thought he and a few of his Coyote buddies would go a journey to find his identity. The Pecos Bill stories are pretty wild so I wanted to use Oaxacan Animal Sculptures as inspiration for the animals and landscape.

Just finished taking my Maya model into Zbrush. Pretty awesome once you get the hang of it. The metal parts will be crisper in the end, mostly worked on the skin testure. I think that head thing is a little much though.

Here is what I have so far on my Borg head model, yes that is supposed to me as a Borg. This weekend is UV mapping! I have mixed feelings about UV mapping. It can be pretty cool until you realize your geometry is whack and have to spend days trying to fix it so the UVs will unfold nicely. The best feeling is when they unfold perfectly. Maya should have a special sound for when that happens :D

Here is my 3rd pass at myself as a borg, I wanted to tell more of a story so I thought I would be the shop borg. I used the saws from band saws and large industrial saws to make up my costume as well as the chains from chain saws. I still like my 2nd pass but I think this take is more original.

BFG Project

Just presented our BFG Project by Roald Dahl in my Visual Development Class. My team worked super hard and it paid off in the end, here are a few pieces I am proud of. Thanks to Nino for giving us this great assignment, across the board everyone in class learned a lot and really engaged wholeheartedly in this project.

This is the moment after the Queen has agreed to help Sophie and BFG capture the Evil Giants. They are sealing the deal with a "tea toast" (hope that isn't impolite or something, thought it would be cool) using teacups of course...A happy, cheerful moment, things are looking up for Sophie.

Moby Dick Project

My character Buniq, Captain Ahab's only child. She is from the Aleutian Islands. Her quest is to kill the beast in hopes that her father's ghost will stop haunting her.

This is my final Albino Beast painting. It still needs some work but overall I think it got better. The design is based on a combination of eels yet has a whale's silhouette, echoing the Moby Dick story.

This is Buniq's ship. She acquired this ship by marooning the Russian captain. Russian's were notorious for taking advantage of the Aleut people in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was an easy task to get the crew mostly of Aleuts to band against the greedy Russian captain.

This is the moment after a great battle between Buniq and her crew against the Beast. The Beast has been killed, Buniq is coming to terms with what she has done and if it was really worth it. Also, now that it is over, what else is there for her to live for?

Giant Albino Eel

Here is my creature design for our "Moby Dick" story in our BFA Seminar. Our only restrictions were that the animal has to believable (not an alien, from our world, giant and albino. I went through many ideations of animals and finally decided upon an eel since they freak me out yet are so delicious over a small bed of rice. My eel is a combination of many types of eels so it is my own creation yet looks like it belongs in our world. I like the pink one but am also drawn to the yellowish one. Albinos are truly interesting in their coloring. As always any comments are welcome. Danke!

Second Pass for BFA Moby Dick story

I am still struggling with getting the right pose for this character. She basically is a pretty tough women, lives on a boat full of men and is seeking to put a large beast out of commission which she thinks will cease her father's ghost haunting her. She wears this old coat of her father's which she has retrofitted to her climate, the Aleutian Islands, see below for reference. I am trying to simplify my designs, I think my sketch above was really shape conscious compared to my past work but once I started painting it in photoshop I lost track of that simplified goal and it turned pretty mushy. Well back to work. Any comments are welcome :)

This is a funny short film, very badly animated for our first BFA assignment. I am not looking to pursue animation as a career but I have had a few classes in it and it is fun to do small projects like this. We had a week to make a short film 30 seconds to 2 minutes to introduce ourselves and explain how/why we became artists. I do have two older brothers that beat me up on a regularly basis but the events are fictitious :) Enjoy!

Birds have begun to haunt me. I did a few little paintings for a fundraiser and two of them sold, made $100 for the fundraiser! Here are a few shots of the ones that sold and a new one I just finished, these are all tiny about 4"x2" roughly. I like small things. Sorry about the glare, I was in such a rush to finish them I forgot to take pictures before I varnished them.

The winner! I changed the tower a bit in the final piece. These are castle designs based in Russia during the Medieval period. The story is about a witch who transforms into an owl. She catches young unsuspecting maidens and turns them into nightingales. She has a room that is full of cages to keep them all in. The main tower is designed to be that room.

Latest Project in Visual Development: Mask Shop Dealer and Mask Shop. Takes place in French occupied Morocco during the 1940's, think Casablanca. Guidelines for the character were that he is old, small in stature and has a white beard. I made my character a mix of French and Moroccan influences.

Waterfall Spirit

Just finished up this project in Visual Development. We designed a waterfall and a spirit which have some sort of relationship to each other. My waterfall spirit is named Echo; she is part of the rocks that make up the waterfall. She could leave but if she did the whole waterfall would collapse. She is burdened by the responsibility of caring for the waterfall and so is usually pretty disgruntle looking. We had a crit yesterday and I have a few things to fix but I am happy with my improvement especially with using photoshop!

This is for JP's class, he wanted us just to use our imaginations and have fun with the subject of WWII. Hitler popped into my mind almost instantly...and I thought about Nature vs. Nurture..and how did he turn out the way he did. I did this illustration to show Hitler as an angry little guy from the start. Nature all the way. Plus I like drawing evil kids who still are pretty cute. Next is Stalin and Mussolini...:)

Visited the Cartoon Museum in San Francisco last Sunday. Super cool exhibit-The art of Coraline was really amazing! It opens on my birthday (February 6th):) Looking forward to seeing the film. Anybody in the SF area should check the museum out. Also, the Totoro exhibit is wonderful!

I spent a few days out in Marin and San Francisco with a few buddies...apart from lots of gossip and making fun of the horrible smell in my car..I got a few sketches done. The California Academy of Sciences reopened October 08 and it has been packed every since! I have been pining to go for a while. If anyone is in the area and hasn't gone, I highly recommend it! To my surprise I fell in love with drawing the fish! Can't wait to get back there and spend more quality time with them! And of course the super cute penguins! The Planetarium was awesome as well!

Designing an ad

This was a fun assignment, we were asked to grab an ad from a magazine and brainstorm on who would buy this product and what their story would be. After we established our audience, we did 150 thumbnails of possible ads. Courtney really encouraged us to think outside of the box and to draw every crazy idea that popped into our heads. This shows my progression through the project. One of my favorite ideas was to show a young woman in bed with the bag, each with a cigarette :) For our final choice though it had to be the most commercial idea. I thought it would be funny if a person loved a bag so much that they adjusted everything around them to fit the bag, in this case, she is picking her puppy based on which one would fit the best in her bag. The final is line drawn with pencil and colored in photoshop.

I am in the middle of painting this piece. I designed six characters based on aspects of myself. I then designed an abode, a sacred space and a common area for these characters. It has been a really fun project so far. I am just posting the abode illustration and will post my character designs later, any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Oh and those thick yellow lines that run down the main character I am going to thin out and make them more like liquid dripping, it is just the resist I used in my watercolor.

"The Sniffer" 6" by 4". Graphite and conte' crayon on green toned paper. This is my second piece after the wine painting, it is about the chemistry and life of wine.

"Origins of Wine." 12" by 10" pen and ink on beige toned paper. This is my third piece of this assignment. Mythology and history associated with wine. The two furry guys are Dionysus (God of Wine) and Jesus (Wine being the symbol of his blood). They each have interesting stories with wine intertwined throughout each.

Alright, so that is three pieces down, I have three more to complete. I am envisioning more color and less thinking. Perhaps a few glasses of wine as well. Cheers!

This is an ecard I made for a Flash class I had last semester. It is based on a semi true story that happened in the Czech Republic years ago, apparently I am still scarred by it. It was a fun project, the animation could be a lot smoother but I learned a lot about Flash in the process of making it.

"Ananas" Graphite on Bristol

Just bought some new graphite pencils! It is the little things like new art supplies that make me really happy. Spent a few hours getting to know this pineapple...pretty fun and oh so tedious.

My place smells quite tropical now!

Hmmm, well I messed around a little more on this watercolor of a house in San Jose. I think I went overboard, the colors should have not bled together as much, got kinda muddy. I was trying to only use Ultramarine Blue and Raw Umber but a few other colors sneaked in. Oh well, another day another shot at painting.

Working on a watercolor. Started with a sketch from the History Park in San Jose. I may have messed it up already but I guess that is how you learn in watercolors. I will continue to post as it progresses.

San Francisco sketches

A few sketches I did a few weeks ago up in San Francisco, top one is a park in Chinatown and bottom one is from Fisherman's Wharf. The one is Chinatown was fun; I sat with my friend Jamie for a few hours talking and drawing. Since the park drawing was so full, I did a really minimal one for Fisherman's Wharf.

This is Reily, he was the main character for a short film I did. My teachers thought his hair was too wild but I thought it went with his character; a scruffy ragamuffin, trouble maker who was really just a little sweet curious kid.

Soooo, I have been completely slacking on my posting....I am a binge blogger what can I say? With that said, I am going to update my blog on this last year of mine in the art world.
